A federal judge sentenced the former business manager of Local 657 of the Laborers International Union of North America to four years in prison for stealing more than $1.7 million from Local 657, according to officials.
U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta also ordered Anthony Wendel Frederick Sr., 50, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, to pay $1.6 million in restitution and forfeit $1.7 million of criminally-derived proceeds.
Laborers International Local 657 merged with Local 11. The labor organization that represents construction laborers in Washington, D.C., and five adjacent counties.
Frederick served as the business manager for Local 657 for approximately 10 years until June 2014.
According to court documents and the evidence, from about May 2013 through June 2014, Frederick directed more than $1.7 million in Local 657 funds to STS General Contracting of Greenbelt, Maryland, without the knowledge or authorization of the Local 657 Executive Board or LIUNA International officials.
